Top 10 Safety Tips for Towing a Caravan
In Australia, over 772,598 caravans are currently registered*, and Australians love hitting the open road. However, safety should always come first, especially when towing a caravan. In New South Wales (NSW) alone, between 2014 and 2018, there were 239 caravan-related crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities and 120 serious injuries*. As a professional rooftop tent manufacturer, Smarcamp is here to share expert outdoor knowledge with you. Here are ten essential safety tips to ensure a smooth and secure journey.
-
Check Your Vehicle’s Weight Limits
Overloading is one of the leading causes of towing accidents. Approximately 50% of caravans and tow vehicles exceed weight limits*. Always ensure your Gross Combined Mass (GCM) and tow ball weight do not surpass your vehicle’s rated capacity. -
Use Extended Towing Mirrors
Towing mirrors are crucial for better visibility. They should extend far enough to provide a clear view of both sides of the caravan and at least 20 meters behind it. We use, install, and recommend Clearview Towing Mirrors. -
Distribute Weight Properly
Proper weight distribution improves stability. Too much or too little weight on the tow ball can cause instability. Ideally, place heavy items directly over the axle and as low as possible. Aim for about 10% of the total trailer weight on the tow ball for optimal balance. -
Regularly Inspect Braking Systems
Brakes are critical when towing. Ensure your caravan’s brakes are in good condition and test them before long trips. If possible, consider installing an electric brake controller for added safety. -
Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure
Proper tyre pressure enhances handling and reduces wear. Check your tyre pressure regularly, especially before long drives. -
Practice Reversing
Reversing with a caravan can be challenging. Practice in a quiet area before your trip to build confidence—this will help when parking in tight spaces. -
Observe Speed Limits
Caravans are less stable at high speeds. In NSW, VIC, SA, TAS, and WA, vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) or GCM over 4.5 tonnes have a speed limit of 100 km/h. In TAS, the limit drops to 80 km/h on gravel roads. In ACT and QLD, follow posted speed signs. In NT, heavy vehicles over 5 or 12 tonnes are capped at 100 km/h. Always check local regulations before travelling. -
Secure All Loads
Ensure all items inside the caravan or ute are firmly secured. Unbalanced loads can shift the vehicle’s centre of gravity. We recommend using MaxBoxes and other restraint systems to keep your gear safe. -
Be Mindful of Wind Conditions
Strong winds or passing trucks can cause swaying. If this happens, slow down and brake gently to regain control. A sway control system can significantly improve stability. -
Take Regular Breaks
Towing is more fatiguing than regular driving. Take a break every two hours, and switch drivers if possible.SMARCAMP is one of the leading rooftop tent brand in RTT area.
